Theology, Rhetoric, Manuduction, or Reading Scripture Together on the Path to God
Candler Jr., Peter M
Like medieval maps with their intricate illustrations, unusual proportions, and omission of seemingly crucial details, medieval works of theology did not provide an objective "lay of the land" for disinterested study but rather laid out an itinerary for individuals "traveling" a specific route. Reading these works was manuduction â€" being taken by the hand and led on the path toward participation, and ultimately union, with God. In Theology, Rhetoric, Manuduction Peter Candler reintroduces this classic way of reading, using such texts as the Confessions of Augustine, the Glossa Ordinaria on the Bible, and the Summa Theologiae of Thomas Aquinas. At the same time he argues that modern thought has displaced the medieval "grammar of participation" with a dualistic "grammar of representation" that determines our commonly assumed attitudes toward memory and learning. The seventh volume in the critically acclaimed Radical Traditions series, Candler's Theology, Rhetoric, Manuduction offers a striking contrast to modern notions about tradition and knowledge, opening the way to a more holistic account of reading, knowledge, and theology.
